This is an astounding book. Alan Moore is an English writer most famous for his influential work in comics, including the acclaimed graphic novels Watchmen, V for Vendetta and From Hell. This is where the series slips into the high gear and exhibits visionary promise. They mean a lot to me. Williams is perfectly in tune with Moore on this book, and the Absolute format really gives his art the chance to shine. During promehea course of her research, she manages to track down, unbeknownst ppromethea her, the most recent Promethea, now in semi-retirement, and unwittingly stirs the interest of an old enemy of Promethea’s, who decides to launch a pre-emptive strike against Sophie out of fear she will become the next Promethea–which, indeed, she does.
It has happened before. It definitely shows the postmodern graphic novel in a more adult vein than the normal good versus evil dualisms of the usual superhero mode.

Subjects dealt with in this series include the occult, the tarot and Hermetic Qabalah. It gets a little boring, although the art alone would make the book worth it. I wish there had been more longing in her visions than needing her ass saved. Whenever a story requires context of this nature, if not handled with finesse the story can become dry relatively quickly.
In the late ’90s, for WildStorm, he was given his own imprint, America’s Best Comics, and created a number of diverse titles that each took the idea of a super-hero comic in very different directions. Promethea was one of the initial batch of ABC titles, and remains my favorite. There’s too much going on while lacking substance.
